FAQ

What is the right age to start music lessons?

Every student is completely different and there is no “right” age. Generally I would recommend that students are 4 years or older.

You are never too old to learn and I always recommend adult beginners or those returning to learning after time off.

Do I need an instrument?

Yes! It is not possible to have lessons without an instrument to practice on in between lessons.

For violin students, I am able to recommend several well reputed shops that run instrument hire schemes at reasonable rates.

Do I need to buy sheet music?

Yes, I will recommend the best material for you which can include not only repertoire but theory books and studies as well. However, I am always happy to arrange music for students and will provide those materials myself.

What happens if I want to cancel or reschedule a lesson?

As long as I receive 24 hours’ notice, there is no charge for cancelling a lesson. With less than 24 hours’ notice, I will charge for the missed lesson. I will always try to reschedule a lesson if possible, although this is not always guaranteed.

How long is each lesson?

This will depend on how old the student is and how experienced they are. For very young students, I would suggest no more than 30mins while older/more advanced students can have lessons up to 60mins long.

How much practice do I need to do?

Some practice is always better than no practice at all! A minimum of 10mins 3-4 times a week will make a noticeable difference than doing no practice and students have been amazed at how much you can practice in 5-10mins. Ideally though, depending on the age and level of the student, students would be practising 20-60mins a day.

Can I do exams?

Yes, of course! I encourage all students to take exams if that is what they wish to do and am experienced in preparing students for ABRSM examinations. However, taking exams is not a requirement and if you simply want to learn for fun then that is absolutely fine.

Do you have a CRB/DBS check?

Yes, I hold several enhanced CRB/DBS certificates and am more than happy to produce them, should it be required.
