Biography

Nicky completed her Masters degree in Performance and Related Studies at Goldsmiths College studying with Dr. Devorina Gamalova and Professor Alexander Ivashkin. During this period she led the PureGold Ensemble and played for the Orchestra of Situation Opera, London Mahler Orchestra, London Shostakovich Orchestra and the University of London Symphony Orchestra. As the concertmaster of OperaGold and the Sinfonia of Goldsmiths under the baton of Roger Redgate and Alexander Ivashkin, among others, she performed the rarely heard Prokofiev cantata 'Seven, They Are Seven' at the Queen Elizabeth Hall.

 

Nicky has participated in masterclasses with Nathaniel Vallois, Nic Pendlebury, Matthew Trusler, Nick Fallowfield, Susanne Stanzaleit, Edward Bale and Alexander Ivashkin. She has performed with international soloists such as Alison Balsom, Joanna McGregor, Andrew Zolinsky, Julian Lloyd-Webber, Alan Opie and Karine Georgian in addition to working with conductors such as Sir Richard Bonynge, Sakari Oramo and John Wilson.

 

Now working as a freelance violinist in London, Nicky does a variety of operatic, chamber, solo, orchestral and session playing performing in venues across London including St. John's Smith Square, Cadogan Hall, AIR studios, Queen Elizabeth Hall and Royal Festival Hall. She was principal second violinist with the Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra, resident at St. John's Smith Square, for four years, is currently leader of the London Arte Chamber Orchestra, regular guest leader of Covent Garden Chamber Orchestra and plays with the London Telefilmonic Orchestra amongst others. Nicky has also worked in the world of historical performance with The Amadè Players, Ensemble OrQuesta/Woodhouse Opera and Pegasus Baroque Orchestra. In addition to playing with The Amadè Players, Nicky acts as their education co-ordinator/administrator/production assistant.

 

In 2012, she co-founded Tewkesbury Camerata, a chamber orchestra for amateurs and professionals, currently acting as leader as well as occasional soloist. In November 2013 Nicky was invited, alongside other British musicians, to play with the Ljubljana International Orchestra performing concerts in Ljubljana, Teatro de Fenice in Venice and London. During December 2014/January 2015, she led the London Arte Orchestra in a tour of southern China, performing in eight cities at venues including Fuzhou Grand Theatre and Shanghai Oriental Arts Centre. During this tour, Nicky also led the joint orchestra of London Arte Orchestra and Tongxin Hall of Guangxi Political Consultative Conference Orchestra in two concerts.

 

Work for film and television has included the soundtrack for a film that was submitted to the Cannes International Film Festival 2012, recording the soundtrack for Neethaane En Ponvasantham by legendary composer Iliayaraja followed by a subsequent promotional tour to Chennai, BBC2 television series 'Maestro at the Opera' and filming scenes for Sky Atlantic series Mr Sloane (2014). In December 2013, she performed live on BBC Radio 3’s ‘In Tune’ programme with OperaUpClose for their production of Johann Strauss’ Die Fledermaus. As a representative of the Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra, she played live on the Paul O’Grady Show in April 2014 and has performed with Iranian singer Shahkar Bineshpajooh. She has recorded three CD’s with The Amadè Players for Resonus Classics and has recently filmed scenes for All Together Now: The Great Orchestra Challenge which has just finished airing on BBC4.

 

As a soloist, she has performed Barber’s Violin Concerto with Goldsmiths Sinfonia under the baton of Gregory Rose, Mozart’s Violin Concerto No.5, Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending and Bernstein’s West Side Story Suite with Tewkesbury Camerata and Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending with Cardiff Concert Orchestra in addition to recitals alongside pianist Richard Black.
